Xerostomia comes from the word Xeros which means dry and Stomia which means mouth. Xerostomia is not a disease but a condition in which the production of saliva is reduced or stopped. Though saliva is very important for health because it aids the digestion of food, protects the teeth from decay, kills bacteria and germs and helps the process of chewing and swallowing.
The causes of Xerostomia include dehydration or loss of body fluid due to fever, diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, or burns.
To prevent the occurrence of Xerostomia, can be done in several ways, among others:
1. Avoid acidic or sweet food before bedtime.
2. Avoid gargle with mouthwash that contains alcohol.
3. Do not Smoke
4. Do not consume caffeine and alcoholic beverages.
5. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
6. Avoid breathing through the mouth. If you have difficulty breathing at night, use decongestants to loosen the nose to freely breathe through the nose.
